Hiking Program Ratings
We have developed the following guide to help you choose a
program that fits your needs. Please understand that
these ratings have been set according to their relationship
with each other, not your individual expectations and fitness
level. While most hikes and outings will fall within the
parameters established by their ranking, some may be slightly
shorter/longer than indicated below.
Level 1...Very little elevation change; pace is a leisurely stroll; frequent water/rest breaks; 1-2 hours of hiking time; average 2-3 miles; very social; best option for novices.
Level 2...Little to moderate elevation change; pace is relaxed but steady; some water/rest breaks; 2-4 hours of hiking time; average 5-7 miles; best option for those people looking for a good way to socialize while exercising.
Level 3...Moderate elevation change; pace still conversational but quickening; some water/rest breaks; 3-4 hours of hiking time; average 7-9 miles; best option for people who want a workout but still want a bit of socializing while hiking.
Level 4...Moderate to significant elevation change; less frequent water/rest breaks; 4-6 hours of hiking time; range from 8-15 miles depending on elevations; best option for proven hikers who are in good shape and want to get a solid day of exercise.
Level 5...Significant elevation change; elevation is so demanding that pace is often slow and steady; infrequent breaks; 6+ hours of hiking time; average 10+ miles of hiking; for ambitious hikers looking to climb major (but not technical) mountains.
