Portland Winterhawks hockey clinics in Bend Sept. 17

Bend, Ore. – (Sept. 2, 2016) – Central Oregon youth hockey players and coaches will get an opportunity to learn from the Portland Winterhawks when the Western Hockey League team visits Bend on Sept. 17.

The Bend Park and Recreation District is currently accepting registration for two youth dryland clinics on Saturday, Sept. 17, at The Pavilion, 1001 SW Bradbury Way.

  • 9-10 a.m.: seven to 10 years of age
  • 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.: 11 to 14 years of age

Cost is $5 per child for the clinic. Spectators are welcome for free. For the dryland clinic, youth participants are asked to bring his or her hockey stick, athletic shoes and athletic wear. Sticks will be available to borrow if needed.

The Portland Winterhawks are one of the most successful Major Junior hockey franchises in North America, three-time WHL champions and two-time winners of the prestigious Memorial Cup, the “National Championship” of junior hockey.

Between clinics the Winterhawks will be available for merchandise sales and autographs.

In addition to the youth clinics, there will be a coaching clinic from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The coaching clinic is free and open to coaches of all sports – hockey and other sports – who want to gain better awareness of coaching philosophy. The coaching clinic will be led by Mike Johnston, Winterhawks vice president, general manager and head coach, and will also take place at the Pavilion.

Coach Johnston is entering his second stint as the Winterhawks’ head coach, having also coached the team from 2008-2014.  He was formerly head coach of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins (2014-15) and an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Kings and Vancouver Canucks, as well as the Canadian Men’s National Team at the 1998 Olympics.
