Simpson Pavilion Construction to Begin

November 14, 2014

Construction is scheduled to begin before Thanksgiving on the new Simpson Pavilion, a multi-sport, open-air, covered recreation and ice facility to be located at the corner of Simpson and Colorado Avenues at the former Mt. Bachelor Park and Ride lot. The Bend Park and Recreation District Board of Directors awarded the contract for construction of the facility at its November 4th meeting.

“The pavilion is one of the most anticipated projects being funded by the 2012 bond measure,” stated Don Horton, Executive Director.  “We are optimistic that people will be enjoying winter ice skating a little over a year from now.”

Covering two to three acres including parking, the pavilion will host a variety of recreational activities, community events and sports including ice sports such as skating and hockey, pickleball, basketball, volleyball, tennis and badminton. The approximately 29,000 sq. ft. facility will feature an 85 ft. by 200 ft. seasonal ice rink (November through March), multi-sport courts (April through October), an 11,000 sq. ft. support building with lobby, customer service area, restrooms and changing rooms and parking.

This project will add to the traffic and pedestrian impacts in the near-by area resulting from construction of the Colorado Ave Dam by the District and sewer line replacement by the City of Bend. Maps showing traffic impacts are available on the District’s website at www.bendparksandrec.org.

The contract for the Simpson Pavilion construction was awarded to Apollo, Inc. of Kennewick, Washington. Century West of Bend is the civil engineer consultant.  The mechanical/electrical consultant is PAE, the architect is Opsis Architecture, and the ice consultant is Rink Management, all of Portland, Oregon.
