The Bend Park and Recreation District Board of Directors met on Tuesday, Nov. 3, for a work session focused on economic development, a Hollinshead House partnership and the process for filling a vacancy on the district’s Budget Committee. A video recording of the meeting is available.

City of Bend Economic Development Initiatives

The board received an overview of the City of Bend’s Economic Development Strategic Plan, completed in January 2026. Katy Brooks, City of Bend Economic Development Director, shared information about the plan as well as current economic indicators, key industry sectors, and urban renewal areas. The discussion supported the district’s strategic goal of expanding and leveraging partnerships that increase community impact.

Hollinshead House Partnership

BPRD staff and Kelly Cannon-Miller of the Deschutes County Historical Society shared an update on the partnership supporting the historic Hollinshead-Matson House. The presentation highlighted the first season of public open houses, held from May through October 2026, and ongoing efforts to recruit and train volunteer docents. The partnership built upon several years of work to preserve the collection, enhance interpretation and provide opportunities for the community to learn about Central Oregon history.

Budget Committee Selection Process

The board reviewed the process for filling one vacancy on the five-member Budget Committee following the completion of Joanne Mathews’ third consecutive term. Staff reviewed the application timeline, eligibility requirements and candidate scoring process. Staff recommended continuing the district’s established selection process, with the board ultimately appointing a qualified community member before the end of the calendar and beginning of next year’s budget approval meetings in early 2027. More information is on the Finance webpage.

The next Board of Directors meeting will be Tuesday, Nov. 17.
