Board of Directors Seeks Candidates for Board Vacancy

The Bend Park & Recreation District Board of Directors seeks candidates to fill a vacant board position. The term will conclude June 30, 2021. It is anticipated the board will appoint the new board member at its Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020 meeting.

The board has five members who serve four-year terms. Each member represents the district at-large rather than separate zones. This is a volunteer position and does not receive compensation.

To be considered for the board position, a candidate must:

  • Reside within the district boundaries.
  • Be a registered voter.
  • Serve remaining board term through June 30, 2021.
  • Be able to attend regularly scheduled board meetings held the first and third Tuesday of each month, primarily in the evening, and other periodic meetings.

Application questions will be posted here by Saturday, Nov. 23.

The application deadline is Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019. Finalists will be selected and notified directly about required attendance at a public meeting on Jan. 7, 2020.

An elected five-member Board of Directors governs the Bend Park and Recreation District. The District’s Board of Directors is responsible for developing district goals and setting policy. The Board meets the first and third Tuesday of each month.

Ted Schoenborn, Board Chair  Board term through June 30, 2021
Ted has been on the board since 2003. He is retired from a career in US Public Health Service. He was the first station manager of (and helped to build) KPOV FM, Bend Community Radio, a community radio station that serves under-represented voices in the Bend community. For nearly 20 years he served as Park Board Chairman in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. The parks developed there won statewide design awards. His experience in building parks and developing recreation programs within budget continues in Bend. Contact: tschoenborn@bendparksandrec.org

Nathan Hovekamp, Board Vice Chair – Board term through June 30, 2021
Nathan Hovekamp moved to Bend in 1997 and has been on the board since 2015. He has a B.S. in biology, an M.S. in zoology, and a Ph.D. in education, and experience in college biology instruction, natural interpretation, and conservation. He has served on the Bend Planning Commission, the Bend La Pine School Board, the board of Central Oregon LandWatch, and Bend Park and Recreation’s citizen advisory committee for Riley Ranch Nature Reserve. Nathan aspires to “contribute to the award-winning excellence that is the hallmark of Bend Park and Recreation.” Contact: nhovekamp@bendparksandrec.org

Ariel Méndez – Board term through June 30, 2023
Ariel Méndez was elected to the board in 2019 and served on the BPRD budget committee from 2017 to 2019. He and his wife, along with their three young children, ride bikes throughout Bend on a daily basis. He is interested in increasing mobility by expanding Bend’s trail system. He was board president for Bend Bikes and a member of the City of Bend’s Citywide Transportation Advisory Committee. He has a Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University and is an instructor at OSU-Cascades. Ariel volunteers as a youth sports coach, values conservation, and will work to ensure that everyone feels welcome in the district. Contact: amendez@bendparksandrec.org

Jason Kropf – Board term through June 30, 2023
Jason is committed to making sure everyone has the opportunity to be active, healthy, and engaged. He has lived in Bend since 2003. Jason serves as a Deputy District Attorney for Deschutes County. He has served on the board of directors for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Central Oregon for the last 7 years, and has coached the Summit High School Mock Trial team for the past 15 years, among other volunteer activities. He holds a B.S. in Philosophy from Oregon State University and a J.D. from University of Oregon School of Law. Jason often joins his partner and school-aged daughter exploring Central Oregon’s diverse recreational activities. He enjoys getting out on our trails on foot and on bike.
