Project Overview

JSFC is the most heavily used district facility and the most valuable single asset. Maintaining the facility is a high priority and requires periodic reinvestment.

After years of use and increased demands on pool use, the district will be replacing the 50-meter outdoor pool cover structure with a new pool cover that can be easily closed and opened for extended use during the fall and winter months, and offer more flexible use in the summer, and during cooler or smokier days.

The project also includes replacement of the main chiller unit for the facility, replacement of roof material on the south wing of the building, re-lining the Myrtha walls in the 50-meter pool, and remodeling the original locker rooms on the north side of the facility.

Parts of the facility and pools will be closed during construction. Please see the Juniper page and Larkspur page for facility and class schedules.

Construction is planned to begin September 2026.

Why is the pool cover and lining being replaced?
It is time to do a comprehensive maintenance project to ensure the heavily used pools continue to provide high quality, reliable and low maintenance use for another 15-20 years. Central Oregon’s extreme seasonal conditions have resulted in wear and tear on the pool cover materials that were first installed 27 years ago. The condition of the roof panels has deteriorated with repeated exposure to winter and summer conditions and need to be replaced. Also, the company that designed and manufactured the structure was recently sold making it challenging to receive technical support and purchase replacement components. While the pool cover structure is the most significant aspect of the project, it’s a great time to complete other work such as the pool lining, locker rooms and main chiller unit.

Why is September the best time for this work?
September is historically the lowest use time of the year for the pools. It also provides the best weather window outside the busy summer season. That is why planned pool maintenance closures have always occurred in September. For the Outdoor Activity Pool, it comes at the end of the regular summer season.

How will this impact aquatic programs?
We are doing our best to minimize impacts and relocate aquatics activities to the indoor pools at Juniper and Larkspur Community Center. The 50-meter Olympic pool closure has a larger impact on lap swimming and competitive activities so modifications are planned.

  • Swim lessons will take place as scheduled at Larkspur and in the Juniper indoor children’s pool.
  • Recreation and family swims will be available at Larkspur.
  • Water exercise classes will mostly be located at Larkspur with some options in the Juniper indoor pool.
  • Swim teams and water polo teams will practice in the Juniper indoor pool.
  • Lap swims will occur in the Juniper indoor pool with some times also available at Larkspur.

How will this impact other JSFC programming?
As timelines are established, we’ll have more information to share about the impacts to fitness activities. Our intention is to do our best to minimize impacts throughout the project to the best of our ability. Patience and understanding is greatly appreciated.

Where can I change while the locker rooms are closed?
Juniper has additional locker rooms and private changing rooms that are not impacted by the renovation project.
